Music

Program Description

The Arts Music Program is comprised of two full credits in each of the four years of the program – Music Performance and Music for Creation.

The primary focus of both courses is developing students’ skills as musicians. In the performance course, students will develop their ability to perform through units in technique, small and large ensembles, as well as solo repertoire. In Music for Creation (AMC1OM), all arts music students work collaboratively to explore the creative and theoretical aspects of music in more depth. This course is organized around different thematic units, including jazz, film music, musical theatre, world music, and composition.

Enriched Programming

At each grade level, students can expect to work with guest artists and clinicians on their instrument. Students will participate in workshops and master classes as well as attend professional performances. All music students also earn additional credits (AMR1O1) for after school music ensembles. Each student, as part of a large ensemble, will perform twice annually at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts. Additional recitals for soloists and small ensembles will be held in smaller venues.

The instrumental music performance course is comprised of students who play brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. These students also perform in the Concert Band and Intermediate Band.

Students who play violin, viola, cello, or double bass should audition for the strings program. These students perform in the string ensemble and full orchestra. Please note that guitar is not offered as a part of the arts program.

The vocal performance course is an opportunity for singers to develop technique and explore all vocal styles. Vocalists perform together as The Mackenzie Singers and students in the Arts program also perform at least one additional smaller ensemble. Students can enroll in musical theatre in grade 10, 11, and/or 12 as an elective within the music program

Why an Arts Program?

Arts programs are unique from any other program offered at the high school level. Arts students are not just committed to academic achievement; they are enthusiastic, well-rounded learners. The ARTS Mackenzie music program brings together like-minded individuals who have a passion for music and the desire to improve as performers. Everyone who is in this program chose to be there and looks forward to coming to class each day. It is a positive and encouraging learning environment.
