IB Newsletter - Alexander Mackenzie High School ; May 2026
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Hope you are doing well. In this newsletter, you will find some relevant information and updates about our IB program at AMHS.
Grade 9–10 Preparatory Programme Update
As we enter the final stretch of the school year, students in Grades 9 and 10 continue to build the foundational skills required for success in the IB Diploma Programme. While course content remains important, the primary focus during these preparatory years is on developing strong academic habits, including structured writing, critical thinking, and independent learning.
By the end of Grade 10, students are expected to demonstrate increased confidence in managing their time, meeting deadlines across multiple subjects, and producing well-organized analytical responses. These skills are essential for a smooth transition into the IB Diploma Programme in Grade 11.
We recognize that this transition can present challenges, particularly in balancing academic responsibilities with extracurricular commitments. Developing consistent study routines and effective time management strategies will be key areas of growth for students over the coming months.
With final assessments approaching in June, we encourage students to begin reviewing material gradually and to seek support from their teachers when needed. Parents can support this process by encouraging regular study habits and open communication about academic progress.
We appreciate your continued support as students progress through the preparatory years and prepare for the next stage of their IB journey.
IB Diploma Programme (DP1 & DP2) Update
As we move through May, our Grade 12 (DP2) students are in the midst of the IB examination session. We commend their perseverance and commitment throughout this demanding period and are confident that they are well-prepared to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed over the course of the programme. We encourage students to maintain balanced routines, including adequate rest and wellness, as they continue through their exams.
For our Grade 11 (DP1) students, this is a time of consolidation and reflection. With final internal assessments and year-end evaluations approaching, students are encouraged to review key concepts, refine their exam strategies, and reflect on their growth over the past year. This reflection is an important step in preparing for the transition into their final year of the IB Diploma Programme.
We would also like to remind families that the IB Diploma Programme includes three core components: Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), the Extended Essay (EE), and Theory of Knowledge (TOK). Successful completion of all core requirements is essential in order to be awarded the IB Diploma. We encourage parents to engage in ongoing conversations with their child about their progress in these areas, particularly with respect to meeting deadlines and fulfilling programme expectations.
As always, we remain committed to supporting students academically and emotionally during this period. We thank parents for their continued support in helping students maintain focus, balance, and confidence as they complete this important stage of their IB journey.
Physics exams are all completed as of April 29th. More IB exams will take place in the coming weeks. (Schedule is posted in April Newsletter). All IB Exams are taking place in our school library.

Just a reminder: DP2 (Gr. 12) students will write the History Paper 1 and 2 Exams on the PA Day on May 4th, 2026 starting at 12:30pm in the school library. They will also need to write the Chemistry Paper 2 Exam on Victoria Day, May 18th, in the morning.
Student Wellbeing and Support
May can be a demanding time for students across all grade levels. Maintaining a healthy balance between academic responsibilities and personal wellbeing is essential. We encourage students to prioritize sleep, stay organized, and reach out to teachers when support is needed. Small, consistent efforts can make a significant difference during this period.
Parents play an important role in supporting student success by helping to reinforce routines, encouraging positive study habits, and maintaining open lines of communication.
Looking Ahead
As we approach the end of the school year, we will continue to support students through final assessments and transitions into the next academic year. Additional information regarding June evaluations and year-end processes will be shared in the coming weeks.
We appreciate your continued support of the IB Programme and your partnership in helping students succeed.
